I always thought it would be able to tow just about anything, and I think one of its ratings is for 3500Kg. However, I've been reading up on caravans, and it seems that the maximum advised tow limit is 85% of a vehicle's kerbweight.

I have a 90 TD5 and drive a 2012 2.4 110 for work. The TD5 is slower and colder but i would have it over the 2.4 any day of the week. The leg room in the 2.4 is terrible and the transit engine doesn't sound like a defender to me. I don't think parts are ever going to be an issue for either vehicle so no real differentiators there.
