Land Rover Defender TD5 ECU: Common fault! This is a common problem for the Defender & Discovery 2.5 TD5 that will cause the engine to cut out over
It could be your bcu body control unit. Reading up on disco 2 problems with these symptoms with a Land Rover mechanic and it says that these problems are common and it’s down to moisture getting in and damaging the earth wire. Ie rusty contact. Try removing it and give it a good looking over.
Beginning to look into the hesitation - one very common problem the TD5's suffer with is oil in the injector loom which seeps down to the ECU plug. The seal where the loom runs into the head can (and will) let oil past which manages to find its way down to where it terminates at the ECU.

Have got a 1999 td5 defender and have owned it since April or so. Problem is, when start engine from cold, temp guage goes to halfway and then drops off to zero after 5 mins of driving. Heater blows nice and hot, pulls very well no problems whatsoever except the guage not responding. Changed the sensor twice, (new one from eBay, didn't fix
The worst case would be stop, lift bonnet, spin fan on by hand, smack with fan-spanner, shut bonnet, two-finger the guy behind who was tooting, and drive on. Also for info, for a TD5 HZ switch, to get the little light in the button to illuminate you join the black/red wire with the orange/red wire. My 86reg 90 with original loom, the dark green wire had a small white rubber band marker on, this attaches to the White with green trace wire as Kev says.
2000 Discover TD5 Auto harsh vibration under power at 2000 -2500. At approx 2000 to 2500 RPM in any gear there is a harsh vibration through the car. Lift off and it goes away. Auto shifts smoothly, engine run well plenty of power. No warning lights on oil levels OK.
This is a short explanation of what I did to resolve a bad start, no power, no throttle response issue on my Discovery td5 after a head gasket replacement. In
3 Answers. Likely to be the xyz switch on the side of the gearbox (if it is an auto). When faulty it seems it sends conflicting messages as to which gear has been selected, causing the ecu to go into limp mode (M+S lights flash and the gearbox allows only limited operation). The aircon drain is is located immediately above it and causes
